Saturday 17th May 1st team away to St Albans
My early morning perambulation to Waitrose to collect my paper and sundries was a splendid one, though a rather bracing northerly wind chilled me to my bones. I pondered on whether two jumpers or three and if soup in a flask should prevail over pilchards. We arrived promptly at 12.30 at St Albans in our club blazers, well apart from those rogues Griffin and Price who were late (Captain and Vice Captain!!). The upstanding Kev Meakin, a very fine fellow, saved the day yet again and further went up in my estimation by winning the toss and electing to field first. Everyone donned their creams and off we went! Chambers and Issitt commencing the bowling duel with the batspersons, their opener being a very fine proponent of the offside late cut and soon we were left fearing a sizable total with the opposition 70 for no wicket off 15 overs despite some intrepid bowling! Up steps Squire Meakin yet again to save our bacon with a masterful display of off cutters whilst engaging in witty repartee, three wickets claimed including the dangerous opener and our quest for victory was revitalised! A very welcome drinks break with a chance to quaff some lemon cordial was a welcome tonic and the The Gentlemen of Ware recommenced. Excellent bowling and fielding ensued with Jack almost taking a stunning catch!. The art critic of some renown, Graeme Unwin with two wickets, Jamie Donovan with a great spell but it was Price (he did finally arrive) to claim the last wickets including two very excellent catches by Hugh Reid.

In the face of some tricky bowling Ware openers Price and Parker, provided patience, positivity, power hitting perfection in a 100 partnership.

Price was the hero and serenely progressed to a glorious 99 until the nameless umpire stepped in to the fray, the villainous Claudius to our Hamlet, triggering the unfortunate and heartbroken batsman with such ferocity the ensuing tempest from the raising of the finger, blew down the tea tent. Griffin and Reid saw us home! A lovely day.
