Sad news

It is with great sadness that everyone at Ware Cricket Club has learned of the passing of Keith Piper.
Keith's association with Ware may have spanned only three seasons, but his contribution to our club and the memories he created will endure for many years to come. A former professional cricketer of the highest calibre, Keith brought not only exceptional talent to the field but also warmth, humour, wisdom and a genuine love of the game.
Before joining Ware, Keith enjoyed a distinguished career with Warwickshire, where he became one of the county's most respected wicketkeepers. Across 200 first-class matches, he scored 4,618 runs, including two centuries, while taking 504 catches and completing 36 stumpings. In one-day cricket, he added more than 250 dismissals behind the stumps and was an integral part of Warwickshire's hugely successful teams of the 1990s.
Yet despite those achievements, Keith wore his success lightly. At Ware, he was simply "Keith" – a teammate, mentor and friend whose enthusiasm for cricket was infectious. Whether sharing advice with younger players, entertaining teammates with stories from the professional game, or competing fiercely in the middle, he enriched our club in countless ways.
His performances for Ware reflected the quality that had made him such a respected county cricketer. Over three seasons, Keith played 27 matches, scoring 771 runs at an average of more than 50. Those statistics speak of a player whose class never diminished, but they tell only part of the story. His presence around the club, his encouragement of others and the standards he set were every bit as valuable as the runs he scored.
Keith's commitment to Ware extended far beyond matchdays. Even at the end of last season, he could be found alongside his good friend Julian helping to put the wicket to bed, happy to lend a hand and contribute to the club he had grown so fond of. It was a gesture that perfectly summed him up: no task was beneath him, and he was always willing to help.
Perhaps his greatest legacy at Ware will be the time he gave to our younger players. Keith made himself available to anyone wanting to learn, generously sharing the vast knowledge and experience gained throughout a distinguished professional career. He did so with warmth, patience and good humour, making every conversation enjoyable and every piece of advice memorable. Many of our youngsters have benefitted enormously from his guidance, and his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.
Keith embodied everything that is best about cricket: competitiveness combined with sportsmanship, excellence balanced with humility, and a willingness to give back to the game that had given him so much.
On behalf of everyone at Ware Cricket Club, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Keith's family, friends, former teammates at Warwickshire, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are grateful that he spent part of his cricketing journey with us and proud that he will always be remembered as a member of the Ware Cricket Club family.
Keith will be greatly missed, fondly remembered, and forever respected.
Rest in peace, Keith.
