Upon arrival.....

The 8 assembled personnel forming this week’s 2nd XI were greeted by glorious weather, a rock hard flat track and a beautiful outfield. No surprise that this club regularly achieves high facilities marks.

Upon winning the toss, stand in skipper Simon Morgan decided to bat and try and set a score. Opening up with Shashi and Nick Cave, the innings started as it really went on, slowly. The opening bowlers offered little and stuck religiously to their tight lines and good pace. Shashi fell in the first few overs, bringing Morgan in.

Cave and Morgan slowly moved the score on, but the much awaited bowling change brought little relief, more pace and tight lines. At one point, no run was scored for nearly 6 overs, the bowlers were just so difficult to get away! Nick eventually fell to a good catch, trying to put one over the top, Sam looked to be getting going before he was snaffled in the slips, Si Green was bowled shortly afterwards looking for the big shot to relieve some pressure, and Timmy Andrews made a good cameo including three of the best shots all match, before departing. Morgan persisted and was joined by John Perret who was bowled out shortly after. Hugh Andrews was deceived by a slower delivery and was bowled. Dan (our 9th Man who arrived just as we started) was the last batsman and he unfortunately fell to more tight bowling.

The score was a poor 87 all out from nearly 34 overs. Not great. Morgan finishing not out on 41 after 2 hours at the crease, Nick Cave 17, Timmy Andrews 12, Sam with 4.

After tea, Hugh and John started with the ball, John showing improvement from the previous week and looked to have got one of the openers with a great delivery caught behind, sadly we didn’t get the decision. Hugh looked dangerous, airy shots went into gaps but fielding with 9 doesn’t help. Morgan and Cave had a few overs each, again with a few chances created. Cave got the breakthrough, Si Green taking a good catch at backward point. Dan and Sam bowled a few good overs but the runs kept coming from the experienced batsmen.

Allenburys won the game and chased down the target from 18 overs.

I would like to say a HUGE THANKS to everyone for sticking at it when things didn’t go our way. Everyone worked hard despite the numerical and ability divide that clearly existed between the sides, and I was really proud of the youngsters who are improving all the time. MOM goes to Nick Cave, again batting well and looked as though he’s never been away with his bowling. Special mention to Timmy Andrews who not only batted fearlessly but stepped in to keep wicket when we left without one!

Onwards and upwards,

S. Morgan
